Short film: Africa’s Voices in Malawi and Zambia

In May 2013, Claudia Abreu Lopes (Head of Research at Africa’s Voices) travelled to Malawi, Zambia and Kenya for our pilot research project, accompanied by filmmaker Dominique Chadwick. They produced a film featuring radio presenters and listeners, demonstrating how Africa’s Voices gave citizens a platform to express their views.

Get grounded in Africa’s Voices’ pilot research by watching the film below (10 mins).

Our pilot project, which is the foundation of Africa’s Voices, harnessed the reach of radio and the spread of mobile phones to gather citizens’ opinions in eight African countries. Radio presenters asked their audience a question about topics ranging from education to health, and invited them to text in their opinions. It was through several iterations of this process that we refined our methodology of igniting conversations, gathering voices and analysing SMS data.
